Illustrations of Russian Classics
Glazunov has painted many illustrations of Russian classical literature. He often speaks with gratitude of A. V. Sofronov, former editor-in-chief of “Ogonyok,” who, even during the Soviet era, made it a point to include re-publications of Russian classics in the magazine’s literary supplements.

Many were surprised to learn that Glazunov had chosen to create illustrations of the works of writer Aleksandr Kuprin. One Italian critic wrote, after reading a book illustrated by the artist, “Glazunov has created an encyclopedia of Russian life. Through his works one can learn about Russia from Dostoyevsky to Kuprin. One must only wonder at the artist’s deep penetration into the world of distinctly different authors while remaining true to his art. Illustrations to Kuprin’s “The Junker Cadets,” “Breguet,” “The Duel,” “The Pit,” and “Moloch” are an artistic triumph.”

Perhaps no single Russian artist has painted more illustrations of Russian classic literature. Inspired by Leskov and his description of late 19th century Russian life, Glazunov brought images from many of the author’s works vividly to life.
