1999. Oil. 300 x 600
Glazunov’s recent works, such as “The Destruction
of the Church on Easter Eve” (4 x 8 m),
“The Market of our Democracy” (3 x 6 m),
and the new version of his world famous
“Mystery of the XX Century” (3 x 8 m), testify
to the artist’s inexhaustible creative potential.
The hundreds of political, cultural and
literary figures depicted on these canvases
are witnesses of our times.
“The Market of our Democracy” reflects the
thoughts of millions of our fellow countrymen
now living in the post-Soviet era, and if
one can compare “The Destruction of the
Church on Easter Eve” with the epic creations
of the Russian school of painting, then
in this work we feel the pain and anger
of the artist, our contemporary, who with
unflinching courage has brought together
on one canvas the entire nightmare of the
turbulent late twentieth century. But despite
everything, there is a shining ray of hope
and faith in Russia’s approaching renaissance.
